Oakland Raiders fans everywhere were dismayed when the news broke that Jon Gruden would be bringing back Greg Olson as his offensive coordinator this season. Fans remember Olson from his first stint as OC of the team back in 2014 during Derek Carr’s rookie season and the memories are not very fond. Olson is a west coast offense guy and many fans described his play calling as dink and dunk, something that seems to be the ultimate insult for the fan base of a team where the vertical offense was basically born under Al Davis.
When the news first broke, I wrote about why fans shouldn’t be concerned about Olson, noting that he would not really be a true offensive coordinator. And during Tuesday’s press conference, Gruden confirmed what was already assumed, that he, not Olson, would be calling the offensive plays. And that he, not Olson, would be designing the scheme and plays that would be called.
