The Oakland Raiders were planning on their first two draft picks in 2017 being a big part of the defense this season. With one of the worst secondaries in the league, Reggie McKenzie drafted Gareon Conley in the first round followed by Obi Melifonwu in the second. Unfortunately for the Raiders, both missed a significant amount of time this season due to injuries. But while both were placed on the injured reserve, Melifonwu was designated to return, and he did just that in week nine against the Miami Dolphins.
In week 11, when the Raiders traveled to Mexico City to play the New England Patriots, Melifonwu went from a guy who was fresh off of the injured reserve and who needed to be eased in, to a guy who was starting at corner against the best quarterback of this era. Then, just as quickly, he went from a starting corner, to a guy who barely plays on defense.
