The Oakland Raiders have already made a big move at the position group for our next piece in the Raiders Roster Review series. David Amerson, a former starting corner for Oakland was cut just two years into a four year extension setting up what could be a very active offseason when it comes to the corner position. But before we get into the corners, as always, you can find all of the earlier pieces in this series here.
Starters: Sean Smith
Backups: Gareon Conley, Antonio Hamilton, Dexter McDonald
Impending Free Agents: T.J. Carrie
Even though Amerson was out most of last season, he was still considered one of the team’s starting corners along with Sean Smith and T.J. Carrie because yes, I do see the nickel corner as a starting corner in today’s NFL. That makes three starters for the Raiders in 2017 who could very well be gone from the team once the 2018 season starts.
Amerson is already gone. T.J. Carrie is going to be a free agent and reports indicate that the Raiders will let him test the market. Sean Smith is likely to be the next player cut by the Raiders unless he takes a big time pay cut. But even if he is willing to take a pay cut, that might not be enough to convince Oakland to keep him on the roster given the criminal case still pending against him.
