Raiders contract review: Cost of cuts, impending free agents and more

NFL: AUG 13 Cowboys at Raiders

Before the playoffs end and the offseason truly begins, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the Oakland Raiders roster from the perspective of contracts. Specifically, looking at who is going to be a free agent, who could be cut and who might be in line for an extension. This is an important part of any offseason but even more so this offseason. With Jon Gruden now in charge, we could see some big time changes to the roster and hopefully, this exercise will help us get an idea of what might be coming our way.

IMPENDING FREE AGENTS

  • Denico Autry, DL, Unrestricted Free Agent

  • NaVorro Bowman, LB, Unrestricted Free Agent

  • T.J. Carrie, CB, Unrestricted Free Agent

  • Justin Ellis, DT, Unrestricted Free Agent

  • Sebastian Janikowski, K, Unrestricted Free Agent

  • E.J. Manuel, QB, Unrestricted Free Agent

  • Lee Smith, TE, Unrestricted Free Agent

  • Jon Condo, LS, Unrestricted Free Agent

  • Reggie Nelson, S, Unrestricted Free Agent

  • Keith McGill, DB, Unrestricted Free Agent

  • Shilique Calhoun, LB, Exclusive Rights Free Agent

  • James Cowser, LB/DE, Exclusive Rights Free Agent

  • Denver Kirkland, G, Exclusive Rights Free Agent

  • Giorgio Tavecchio, K, Exclusive Rights Free Agent

  • Erik Harris, S, Exclusive Rights Free Agent

PLAYERS WHO CAN BE CUT WITH NO CAP HIT

  • Khalil Mack, DE/LB Savings: $13.8 million (I know, he won’t be cut, duh)

  • Kelechi Osemele, G Savings: $10.5 million (See above)

  • Sean Smith, CB, Savings: $8.5 million

  • Rodney Hudson, C, Savings: $8.3 millions (We don’t need to do this every time, right?)

  • Bruce Irvin, DE, Savings: $8.2 million

  • Michael Crabtree, WR, Savings: $7.6 million

  • David Amerson, CB, Savings: $6 million

  • Marshawn Lynch, RB, Savings: $6 million

  • Jared Cook, TE, Savings: $5.3 million

  • Cordarrelle Patterson, WR/KR, Savings: $3.2 million

  • Marshall Newhouse, OT, Savings: $1.7 million

  • There are 17 other players on the roster who account for under $1 million in salary cap, who can be cut without any dead money. The only person of note is Jalen Richard, who would save the Raiders $630K

PLAYERS WITH MINIMAL CAP HITS if cut ($3 million or less)

  • Donald Penn, OT, $3 million cap hit, $5.1 million savings

  • Seth Roberts, WR, $2 million cap hit, $2.4 million savings

  • Marquette King, P, $150K cap hit, $2.9 million savings

  • Mario Edwards, DL, $659K cap hit, $1.2 million savings

  • Jamize Olawale, FB, $190K cap hit, $1.6 million savings

  • There are a number of other players who can be cut with a minimal cap hit and under $1 million in savings, mostly recent draft picks, the most notable of which is Jihad Ward, DL, $1.1 million cap hit, $369K savings

PLAYERS WHO COULD GET AN EXTENSION

  • Khalil Mack, free agent after 2018

  • Amari Cooper, free agent after 2019 (if the Raiders exercise their team option. Otherwise, he is a free agent after 2018)

  • Cordarrelle Patterson, free agent after 2018

  • Mario Edwards, Jr., free agent after 2018
