The fourth round turned out to be a big one for the Oakland Raiders who went into the draft with one fourth round pick. By the end of the fourth, the Raiders walked away with three new players taken in the round.
And with every one of those picks, the Raiders were clearly looking for one thing: Potential.
With all three picks: Maxx Crosby, Isaiah Johnson and Foster Moreau, the Raiders brought in guys who are perhaps a bit raw but who have big time upside.
It was a great strategy and has the potential to pay off big time. At this point in the draft, every player you take is going to have knocks. Every player is going to have question marks.
By trading back and increasing the number of picks, the Raiders increased their odds of hitting on one. And by drafting guys who have the potential to be very good, they increased their odds of striking it big if they hit on one.
The Raiders also kept with a theme of hitting on positions of need. They doubled up on pass rushers and corners, two incredibly important positions that they could use more bodies at. They also addressed a big need at tight end with Foster Moreau.
And again, and most importantly, all of these are guys have the potential to develop into starting caliber players.
