One name stands out above the rest in the new Raiders coaching hires
The Oakland Raiders announced a list of coaching hires on Thursday and while most of the names on the list had already been rumored to be joining Jon Gruden, one of the names was entirely new: Defensive line coach Mike Trgovac. And of the names that were officially announced, it’s the new name that is most exciting.
Trgovac comes from Green Bay where he has been the defensive line coach under Dom Capers since 2009. Prior to joining the packers, Trgovac spent six years as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers.
In his nine years with the Packers, Trgovac has helped a defense that ranked in the top ten for sacks in all but three seasons, and in one of those seasons the team was ranked 11th. During two of his six seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Panthers, Trgovac led them to a top ten defense.
He’s been coaching in the NFL for over 20 years after first getting to the league as the defensive line coach of the Philadelphia Eagles (where the offensive coordinator at the time happened to be a young man by the name of Jon Gruden).
With Trgovac, the Raiders get an experienced coach with a ton of success in the NFL both as a defensive line coach and as a defensive coordinator. He’s also yet another coach who has a tie to Gruden which will hopefully make the transition easier since they have a working relationship.
Over all, it’s a solid staff being put together by Gruden but aside from perhaps Derrick Ansley, who will be the new secondary coach, Trgovac is the name that is most exciting. Ansley, however, while exciting as an up and coming coach, doesn’t have the same resume as Trgovac. Ansley excites me and I believe he will be a very good addition, but Trgovac is the one name on this list who really feels like a big time get for Gruden and company.
