When it first began to leak that the Oakland Raiders were bringing back Jon Gruden, many immediately began to question what that meant for general manager Reggie McKenzie. Most assumed that Gruden would demand ultimate control over the personnel and that McKenzie’s tenure with the team would be coming to an end. But after the Gruden press conference on Tuesday, it would seem that McKenzie’s status with the team and owner Mark Davis remains strong.
During the question and answer session of the press conference, Davis was asked about how long he had wanted Gruden as his head coach. His response was that as soon as his father passed away and he gained control of the team, it was his dream to have Jon Gruden coach it and Reggie McKenzie as the general manager.
His comments on McKenzie were unprompted and seemed to put McKenzie at the same level of status as Gruden as far as Davis goes. Though many have questioned McKenzie’s job stability with the Raiders, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Most reports over the years have indicated that McKenzie is Davis’ most trusted adviser.
