Khalil Mack gets undervalued by Pro Football Focus
The annual Pro Football Focus top 101 players are in the process of being announced and one player we are used to seeing in the top 5 is now number 31. This is of course “edge defender” and former Defensive Player of the Year, Khalil Mack.
In their defense, Pro Football Focus does state that this more of a 2017 season ranking than overall ranking, which will send your mind into a psychedelic loop if you think on that too hard. But even with that being true, they are clearly trying to “out think the room” on this one.
Ok look, we’ve been told over and over again that PFF knows what it’s doing when it comes to football analytics and to be honest they do a pretty good job, but to have Mack ranked as just an edge rusher is very short sighted.
Mack is also one of the best run defenders I’ve ever had the privilege to watch play. Now we have also have factor in that he and the Silver and Black obviously had a down year and everyone including Mack dreadfully regressed. However, to sit here and tell me that Khalil Mack is 31st is just mind boggling, regardless of an underwhelming 2017.
The article does go on to say that Mack still graded out at 92.1 which I’m told is good but if there is 30 players ranked out above that (there isn’t) then their rankings are quite inflated and thus shouldn’t be 31.
Bah humbug.
*disclaimer: I actually am a fan of advanced stats but only when common sense is applied and this seems as far away from common sense as you can get.
Now you kids stay off my lawn with your analytics!!
