Statistically, the Oakland Raiders defense has been pretty darn good over the past two weeks with John Pagano calling the plays. Don’t believe me? Take a look at these stats:
But during his time as defensive coordinator, Oakland has played two very bad offenses, which begs a chicken or the egg-esque question: Is the Raiders defense actually good now or is it just that they played two very bad teams?
The answer, as always, is somewhere in the middle of the two extremes.
First of all, we know it’s not just that the Raiders were playing bad teams. How do we know that? Because Oakland has played bad offenses this season and did not put up defensive statistics anywhere near as good as this. Remember when they took on the Ravens, who at the time had the worst passing offense in the NFL? How about when they made Jay Cutler look borderline elite?
And then there was the time they lost to the Broncos. Yes, Denver was starting Trevor Siemian at the time, but let’s not pretend Siemian is good. Better than Paxton Lynch? Sure. Good? Definitely not. He’s completed less than 60% of his passes this season and has more interceptions than touchdowns, including three picks last week against the Miami Dolphins.
