Derek Carr is clapping back on Twitter and its marvelous
The mild manored quarterback of the Oakland Raiders, Derek Carr, is sometimes portrayed as a guy who is too nice for the NFL. So much so that some went so far as to claim that he would not be able to handle Jon Gruden’s in your face style of coaching (something I strongly refutedhere). Not surprisingly, Derek Carr’s social media presence reflects his generally positive nature.
But in the new year, we’ve seen a little bit of a new Derek Carr on Twitter. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still the good natured and fun loving guy that fans adore, but he’s also not sitting back and taking some of the abuse that comes from those that make up the lowest common denominator of Raider Nation’s presence on the platform.
The first time I noticed this new side of Carr was a little over a week ago when this gem appeared on his page:
Yes of course if those coverages dictate to do so… example… 3rd and 22.. 87 yard TD to Coop… there are more but you get it.🤡 #blockedhttps://t.co/sq4Z2XRcOe
You have to figure after the season the Raiders just had, that he’s gotten a lot of tweets like this one. And we’ve seen how other players have handled things like this, often times with a much more harsh response than what Carr provided. You kinda have to love this response. It not only hints at the fact that the twitter user he’s responding to doesn’t understand football the way Carr does, he also throws in a reference to a play that goes against what the user is saying. And yet, even though Carr is clapping back, it doesn’t come off as harsh or mean, he still comes off as a pretty nice guy, which makes it even more entertaining.
And then yesterday, he came with another great clap back, this time against a twitter user who was falsely claiming that Carr does not sign autographs for fans at training camp (something that pretty much everyone knows is false as Carr is well known for spending lots of time signing autographs).
You mean training camp in Napa when I stay past the horn blowing every single day bc I love our fans? Stop spreading lies. Won’t allow it. https://t.co/toZT6cuRQ3
The first clap back was clearly about a fan who was frustrated with the season. This time, it’s a fan who clearly has entitlement issues. There seem to be a lot of fans who get angry when players don’t sign autographs every second of every day that they are in public, which is plain and simply absurd. But at the same time, at least this guys absurdity gave us another great Derek Carr clap back.
I for one, am enjoying seeing this new, and a little bit edgier Derek Carr on Twitter and am hopeful that he carries this new “I’m not taking shit” attitude onto the football field next season.
If Carr develops an “FU” attitude, he could be scary. He is never one to shy away from taking the big shot down the field, 2017 not withstanding, couple that with an attitude of “Do your worse, I am here all day”. Add to that Gruden fiery demeanour and things could get nuts. WOO HOO, GO RAIDERS
